Neuerlich ein Tag der Abreise -- Again a departure day

Gerade zurueck von unserer 3-taegigen Outback tour geht es fuer uns heute nachmittags - wenn Oesterreich gerade aufwacht - weiter zum Flughafen um den Flieger nach Cairns zu erwischen.
Einen genauen Bericht der Safari werden wir noch nachliefern, evtl. gestueckelt in einen Post pro Safari Tag.
Jetzt werden wir uns dann allmaehlich auf den Weg nach Alice Springs machen um uns noch den Royal Flying Doctor Service anzusehen und einen Happen essen.
Also bis spaeter aus Cairns, dann sind wohl auch schon die Europaer munter.

Back from our 3 day Outback Safari we will catch our airplane to Cairns this afternoon - when Austria is slowly waking up.
A detailed report from our Safari will follow ASAP, maybe sliced into one Post per Safari day.
Now we're leaving for Alice Springs where we'd like to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service and take a bite.

Heute frueh gings gleich weiter mit dem Flieger nach Alice Springs. Dort angekommen versteht man auch gleich warum ein Insektenschutzmittel und Sonnencreme so wichtig ist ;)
Hier schwirren tausende Fliegen herum und sobald die Sonne raus kommt merkt man auch gleich, dass da nicht zu spaszen ist.
Unser Hotel liegt diesmal etwas auszerhalb von der "Stadt" aber mit dem Shuttelservice wurden wir recht rasch ins Zentrum gebracht. Dort schauten wir uns zuerst um was zu trinken um bevor wir den Aussichtspunkt "Anzac Hill" unter die Lupe nahmen.Von dort hat man eine gute Rundumsicht ueber die Gegend.
Alles in Allem ist die Stadt nicht unbedingt ein Knaller. Das Zentrum besteht mehr oder weniger aus Shops (e.g. Auto, Kleidung, Alltagsgegenstaende) - wobei sich der Tourismus kaum verleugnen laesst - und Bildungseinrichtungen sowie einer Kirche.

All in all I would say Alice Springs is not really a catch but as the town is more or less only a bunch of shops (car, grocerie, clothes,...), schools and a church but the tourism can't be denied. The residential area is outside.
Tomorrow we are getting up quite early to go on our safari trip. Therefore we're not going to post any updates for 3 days. Let's see if there is at least a mobile connection available

Letzter Tag in Sydney -- Last day in Sydney

Das war nun also Sydney, eine Metropole am Ende der Welt... Heute hatten wir uns mit einer Faehre von Circular Quay zum Darling Harbour bringen lassen um uns die touristischen Hafenrundfahrten zu sparen. Dabei bekommt man einen kleinen Einblick in die Bucht an der Sydney liegt und das fuer nur ~5AUD pro Person - kann ich waermstens empfehlen.
Anschlieszend sind wir direkt ins Sydney Aquarium gegangen und konnten von Salzwasserkrokodilen bis hin zu Seehkuehen die Unterwasserwelt von Australien bewundern. Der Eintritt war zwar nicht ganz guenstig, aber wir haben den Besuch nicht bereut. Sehr imposant fand ich persoenlich die Seekuehe und die Stachelrochen.
Bei unserem Besuch viel mir auf, dass sich die Besucher wohl sehr um die Tiere sorgen, so findet man Hinweisschilder zu folgenden Themen:
- "Dead eel" - Die Aale schlafen angeblich gern mit dem Bauch nach oben und das braucht keinen zu beunruhigen, sie [Tierpfleger] versichern, dass es den Tieren gut geht.
- "Stuck turtle" - Auch wenn es hin und wieder so aussieht als ob die Schildkroete unter einem Stueck eingeklemmt waere, ist das ganz OK und die Schildkroeten wissen schon was sie machen.
- "Eels in the pond" [im Botanischen Garten] - Die Aale haben sich dort von selbst angesiedelt und man bekommt sie auch nicht mehr raus. Es ist zwar kein netter Anblick wenn ein Aal ein Kuecken frisst aber so ist nun mal der Lauf der Dinge. Ein ander mal schmeckt der Ente ein Aaljunges.
Ich find das richtig lustig wenn man sich vorstellt wie aufmerksame Besucher sich bei den Tierpflegern melden :D
Nach dem Aquarium gings dann weiter zum nahegelegenen Sydney Tower, der sich als Aussichtspunkt bestens eignet. Leider ist der Eintritt recht teuer mit 25 AUD und ich bin mir nicht sicher ob das Geld nicht anders besser angelegt waere. Beim Eintritt waere noch die OZTrek Show dabei - mich erinnert es an den NY Skyride - und da halte ich mich lieber fern.
Um den letzten Tag noch zu genieszen spazierten wir am spaeten Nachmittag raus zum Hafen und durch den Botanischen Garten zu einem Aussichtspunkt um die Oper im Sonnenuntergang zu fotografieren. Leider wurde aus dem schoen kitschigen Sonnenuntergang nichts, aber trotzdem habe ich ein paar ganz nette Bilder von der Skyline und der Oper.
Die Skyline ist einfach nur schoen und mit dem schoenen Garten ein herrlicher Ort zum entspannen.
Als Futterquelle hatten wir das Hard Rock Cafe in Sydney ins Auge gefasst, das leider etwas vom Hafen entfernt liegt. Frohen mutes und mit Aussicht auf einen leckeren Burger gingen wir los. Nach einer Weile als ich die Orientierung verloren habe hat uns ein nettes Aussie Paerchen weitergeholfen "Oh, I think it's closed". Soviel also dazu ;)
Unseren Burger haben wir nun doch bekommen und zwar gerade beim Hotel ums Eck. Leider hat uns kein Reisefuehrer oder Urlauber auf die gastronomischen Sitten hier in Australien vorbereitet, somit war selbst das noch ein kleines Abenteuer.
Uns ist zwar durch die Englaender bewusst, dass es nicht zwingend einen Tableservice gibt aber bisher dachten wir das sei nur bei Getraenken so. Jedenfalls muss man hier nicht nur fuer sein Bier an die Bar gehen sondern auch fuers essen. Dort bezahlt man alles gleich - was recht angenehm ist - und bekommt dann ein Tischschild mit einer Nummer drauf. Sobald dann das Gericht fertig ist wird es zum Tisch gebracht und - wenn alles vollstaendig ist - die Nummer wieder abserviert.
Ja, so kann man intelligenz vom Servicepersonal zum Gast auslagern ;)
So, das wars mal fuer heute und morgen geht es weiter nach Alice Springs.

That was Sydney so far, a metropolis at the end of the world...
Today we took the ferry from Circular Quay to Darling Harbour because we wanted to see the harbour without the tourist tours. You really get a feelin about the bay where Sydney is located and for 5AUD pP I can recommend this to everybody.
After our arrival in Darling Harbour we headed directly to the aquarium where we found nearly everything ranking from Salties to "Nemos", it's not really cheap but it was worth the money. My personal favourites were the sting rays and the dugongs.
During our stay I got the impression that the visitors are very carefull when it comes to the animals because we found funny hints like these:
* "Dead eel" - Eels like to sleep in strange positions so it may be that they lie bottom up in the tank. This mustn't bother you and we guarantee they are all well.
* "Stuck turtle - Even if it sometimes seems that a turtle is stuck beneath a piece of wood we can tell you that they are not harmed, the turtles know what they do.
* "Eels in the pond" [royal botanic garden] - The eels have colonialised themselves there and even if we truncate the pool they are afterwards back in. It's not nice to see a duckling getting eaten by an eel but that's nature. On the other side a eel baby is a welcomed food by a duck.
I find these comments very funny as I'd like to imagine how the visitors alarmed the employees :D
Later we went to see Sydney Tower which is close by the aquarium. The entry is not really cheap (25AUD) and from my perspective I'm not sure if I'd do it again. In the entry fee is the OZTrek included which reminds me somehow of the New York Skyride which was not my piece of cake.
To get the most of our last day in Sydney we went to the botanic garden in order to get a good sunset picture of the opera. Well, I didn't got my sunset but hopefully also some nice pics from the skyline and the opera.
The garden is just a beautiful place to watch the skyline and relax.
For the dinner we wanted to see the Sydney Hard Rock Cafe which is a bit of walk from the harbour. Always having the good burgers in mind we wen on but eventually I lost track of the way and a nice OZ couple has offered their help. "Oh, I think it's closed" - so much on this ;)
We got our burgers in the end around the corner of our hotel in a pub called "333". Sadly we never got any hints on the Australian pub culture so even that was a small adventure. We know from the UK that some don't offer table service but just for drinks but the aussies have improved this model and you also have to order your food at the counter.
Afterwards you get a card with a number on it whih you put on your table and once the food is ready they serve it and in return they take the card.
The good thing is you have paid everything on the counter and you don't need to wait in order to receive the bill.
That's it for today and tomorrow we're leaving for Alice Spings.

Tag 2 in Sydney -- Day 2 in Sydney

Tag 2 [17:04] in Sydney und diesmal haben wir schon einiges mehr gesehen als gestern.
Nach dem Fruehstueck machten wir uns auf den Weg zum Botanischen Garten. Waehrend unserem Spaziergang trafen wir auf Flughunde, gelbhauben Kakadus und einheimische Sydneysider die sich fotografieren liesen *eigenartig*.
Leider ist das Wetter seit gestern etwas trueb und windig - heute hats sogar etwas geregnet - aber das kann die Eindruecke kein bisschen mindern.

Bis wir den Botanischen Garten fertig angeschaut hatten war es auch schon wieder gegen Mittag und wir machten uns mal auf die Suche nach einem netten Restaurant.
Fuendig wurden wir dann in Darling Harbour wo wir im Hurricane's Grill 110 AUD gelassen haben. Aber es war auf jedenfall lecker :D Seafood ist einfach besser in Laendern die am Meer liegen.

Day 2 [17:04] in Sydney and today we've seen much more than yesterday.
After breakfast we made our way to the Royal Botanic Gardens where we met cockatoos, flying foxes and native Sydneysiders which wanted to get photographed *strange*.
Unfortunately the weather is a bit cloudy and windy - today we also got some rain - but this will not impair our Sydney experience.
Once we were through the botanical garde it was already lunch time and we started searching for a good restaurant which we found in Darling Harbour, where we left 110AUD. It was very delicious and worth every cent :D the seafood is much better in nations which have access to the ocean.
In general someone could say that Sydney has developed an unexpectedly good coffee culture, the espressos were very good and short wherever we tried one. These street cafes make the city a very cosy metropolis and makes it very livable...
Endlich da -- There, at last

Es ist geschafft, nach einer anstrengenden Reise sind wir endlich in Sydney angekommen.
Bei der Gelegenheit moechte ich noch mit einem Geruecht aufraeumen: wenn man diversen Australien Urlauber glauben schenkt, dann sind die Grenzbeamten viel freundlicher als anderswo. Aber seit heute kann ich sagen "Bloedsinn!". Es ist ganz egal ob in Amerika, Deutschland oder Australien, die Grenzbeamten sind alle gleich wortkarg.
Bei der Gelegenheit moechte ich noch mit einem Geruecht aufraeumen: wenn man diversen Australien Urlauber glauben schenkt, dann sind die Grenzbeamten viel freundlicher als anderswo. Aber seit heute kann ich sagen "Bloedsinn!". Es ist ganz egal ob in Amerika, Deutschland oder Australien, die Grenzbeamten sind alle gleich wortkarg.
Bis auf die Abnahme von Fingerabdruecken kam mir die Einreise nach USA auch nicht viel komplizierter vor. Gut, fuer Australien braucht es nur einen Einreisefragebogen und man bekommt auch nur einen Stempel statt einen Abschnitt in den Pass aber durch die Quarantaenebestimmungen haelt sich das die Waage.
Noch abenteuerlicher als die Anreise war aber heute wohl die Besorgung eine Mobilen Breitband SIM Karte.
Es ist wohl ein Fehler zu glauben den weit verbeitetsten Anbieter einfach mal so in einem Laden in Sydney zu finden. Nach stundenlangem Suchen und umherirren sind wir nun zu Telstra gegangen - statt Optus.
Doch selbst dort haben wir wohl eine Stunde gebraucht bis wir endlich mit 2 SIM Karten aus dem Laden spaziert sind. Naja, immerhin scheint es ja zu funktionieren ;)
Abgesehen vom herumirren in der Stadt haben wir noch nicht viel angestellt da wir total kaputt sind. Wir sind zwar runter zur Oper und der Harbour Bridge aber viel mehr Motivation hatten wir nicht. Vielleicht schaffen wir es ja heute nochmal, dann kann ich in paar Fotos machen. Simon hat sich nochmal auf's Ohr gehaut und vielleicht ist er bis dann ja wieder halbwegs fit (der arme konnte im Flieger kaum schlafen).

It's done! After the long and exhausting journey we're in Sydney, at last.
I want to catch the opportunity and clear the rumour that the Australian border control is much more friendly than anywhere else. That's complete "Nonsense!" The border executives in US, Germany or Australia are all equally ineloquent.

If you would ask me I would say the imigration to US was similiar in the complexity. Given that you only have to fill in one questionnaire and you only receive a stamp but you have to comply to the quarantine restrictions.
But far more adventureous was than the journey was to get a pre-paid mobile broadband SIM. It seems like you should eventually find a shop from the biggest mobile provier (Optus) when you walk through Sydney but no such luck. After long searching and strolling through the streets we went to Telestra and bought 2 SIMs - and needed 1 hour to do so. But hey, at least it seems to work ;)
Other than strolling aroung Sydney we haven't done much because we're totally wrecked. Nevertheless we went down to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera but we hadn't got the power to explore it properly.

Eigentlich wollten wir uns erst melden wenn wir in Sydney sind, aber da wir hier gerade viel Zeit bis zum Anschlussflug + ein WLAN haben, melden wir uns jetzt schon.
Muede aber doch sitzen wir nun am mega Flughafen von Dubai. Wer die ganze Welt treffen will, der muss hierher kommen.
Nach einigen Umwegen haben wir auch unser neues Gate entdeckt und US Dollars in Dirham gewechselt um ein Fruehstueck zu bekommen.
Mein EEEPC hat nun bald keinen Strom mehr, also bis bald in Australien!

We're currently sitting on Dubai International Airport and waiting on our connection flight to Sydney.
After some detours we found our Gate and exchanged some US Dollars - which I have still since my trip to NY - into Dirham to get some breakfast.
As the power of my eee pc is getting low I think I'll end the post right away. See you in OZ
Nur noch ein paar Stunden bis zum Abflug -- Only a few hours to departure

Nun ist es soweit, in wenigen Stunden sitzen wir schon im Flieger nach Dubai. Geplante Startzeit ist um 22:35 in Muenchen (Flug EK052) und um 06:30 sollten wir in Dubai landen. Geschaetzte Flugzeit fuer diese Strecke betraegt 5 Stunden 55 Minuten.
Von Dubai gehts dann um 10:15 (Flug EK412) weiter nach Sydney wo wir um 06:05 am Dienstag den 15. September landen werden. Das sind dann geschaetze 13 Stunden und 50 Minuten Flugzeit nach denen wir sicher total geraedert sind. Aber zumindest wird dieser Flug mit einem Airbus A380 durchgefuehrt - da bin ich ja mal gespannt :)
Unsere Taschen sind auch schon so gut wie fertig gepackt, die Wohnung aufgeraeumt, die verdammte Kamera geputzt und die Marderfalle am Auto deaktiviert.
Viel wird wohl nicht mehr fehlen... hoff ich zumindest ;)

Only a few hours left until our departure in Munich which will be 22:35 and estimated arrival in Dubai 06:30 (flight EK052), this means around 5h 55min flight.
From Dubai we'll leave at 10:15 (flight EK412) and arrive in Sydney around 06:05 on Tuesday 15. Sept which means another 13h and 50min flight after that we'll be totally wrecked. But at least this flight will be done with an Airbus A380 - I'm really excited about that :)
Our bags are packed, the flat is cleaned, the damn camera too and the marten trap in the car is deactivated.
There shouldn't be much left... at least i hope so.
