Because we bought some handy swimming gear while we stayed in Cairns (Surfshirt / Shorts / Towels) we were now reay for the next adventure, the Great Barrier Reef!
Last Saturday (26.Sept.2009 08:30) we got on board of the Poseidon and drove 70km from Port Douglas out into the ocean.
Before we left the quay we took some "Tavelcalm" which were sold on board to truly enjoy this trip - just in case.
While we were heading for the first reef the crew told us about the safetyinstructions, the agenda and of course how to handle the snorkling gear.
The Poseidon has the permission to visit 56 reefs where they choose 3 for one day. At the first contact with the 26 degree (celcius) warm water the snorklers had to use a "Noodle" in order to get used to the ocean and for the crew to see our swimming skills. At the second stop this Noodle was only optional.
During the tours in the reef 2 of the crew members were with us to show us the fauna and tell us about the ecosystem of the reef.
The third and last stop was at the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef and therefore the current was accordingly but with this crystal clear water we could see even sharks. During the trip we saw a lot clownfish, parrotfish, big clamshells and of course a lot of other fish which I don't know the names.
In between the single dives we got fruits, muffins, tea/coffee and lunch. So this was an overall very comfortable and pleasant trip for both of us.
Sunday in the morning we went to the local market in Port Douglas to get some fruits afterwards we drove to Townsville via Kuranda and the Tablelands to Lake Eacham. It's located in the National Park named after the lake itself and in the middle of the rainforest. This crater lake has very clear water and so we could see some turtles in the lake while we walked around it.
As it was noon we ate a little bit at the park next to Lake Eacham and then we went on to Townsville.
This morning we were woken up by car noises instead of birds singing as we got used to the last few days. This camping ground was not my piece of cake but it was only a stop for one night and now we're in Airlie Beach at a Big4 for 3 nights.
Maybe we find a way to get to whitsunday island without buying an expensive yacht cruise

Mal sehen was wir machen.

We're today very good at making updates to the Blog and therefore here's another update from me.
Tomorrow in the morning we'll pick up our campervan and drive to the airport where a flight over the reef is waiting. When do you have the chance to do this?
Afterwards our Route is going north to Cape Tribulation where we'll stay for one night and drive back to Port Douglas on Friday evening. Staying in Port Douglas we'll go snorkling at the reef on Saturday and visiting the market on Sunday morning to restock some food.
Then we're heading south to Brisbane! An OZ adviced us to drive at the inland rather then using the highway on the coast because the landscape would be more beautiful. Let's see what we'll do.
As I believe we're not going to have inet access at Cape Trib we're probably not updating a few days.

Tag 3 - 21.09.2009 04:45:
Evelyn to Katie: "Katie... i think i forgot my mobile".

Day 2 - 20. Sept. 09 05:30
A "good morning everyone" was waking us up after a restless night. Apart from a storm there was also a party tent from another group near by which had disco until 03:00 [am] in the morning. After a second "wakey, wakey" we thought it would be better to get up now because our guide warned us that the 3rd call would be accompanied with cold water *shiver*.
We just took a short brekky and then Katie took us to see the sunrise near the Kata Tutja. Unfortunately the clouds were quite heavy and so it was not really that breathtaking ;)
Following this we took a walk in the "Valley of Winds" for about an 2hrs. The name already implies that this valley is more or less a windy but a sacred one. I think it's because of the flora and fauna which lives in between the heads of Kata Tutja.
That noon we prepared to leave the Yulara camp for another one near Kings Canyon as this would be our next tour. Taking a bite of sandwich and cleaning the tents while Katie tried to change a tire of our bus.
The bus travel was apart from seeing "Brumbies" (wild horses), a stop for the lookout to Mt. Connor and one stop for firewood quite unspectacular.
Once in Kings Creek Station we chose our new tent and helped Katie preparing the traditional meal which was cooked in a camp oven at the fire and covered with coil. She took 4 of these ovens where one held bread, one vegetables, chicken tighs with couscous + sweet chili + soy sauce and chicken tighs in redwine.
We decided that this evening needs a beer and peered with our colleagues from Spain to get six pac at the nearby station.
As the dinner needed 2 hours to cook we used the time to talk to the other tour guest like the couple from spain working for the airport, a couple from munich, the couple from Fort Lauderdale and our special character from Italy which was complaining every now and then but only speaking a few words of english.
Enjoying our dinner and second beer we decided to go to bed as tomorrow will be again an early start at around 4:15 with another "wakey wakey".

[Platzhalter Foto Tour]
Fortsetzung folgt....
We've been waiting full excitement for the pick-up to get on our 3-day safari to Uluru/Kata Tutja/Kings Canyon. That time we didn't knew this would be a drive of appr. 500km but the OZ think slightly different when it comes to distances than we europeans.
It was not that bad as our guide Katie made some stops at roudhouses where we could get up and walk a bit. Quite funny that a lot of these stops had at least a dingo or more "pets" like kangaroos, emus, parrots etc.
In the early afternoon we reached our campside, moved into one of the tents and afterwards prepared some lunch (sandwiches) get ready for Uluru.
Our discovery started at the cultural center (photographing not permited) continued with a walk at the basis of the sacred mountain. Wraping the two things up Katie told us the story behind Uluru and showed us some wallpaintings of the Anangu. While we were talking an Aborigine woman wanted to show us what she has found - a thorny devil. Of course I shot some pics cause this little guy was so cute :)
As the sun began to decent we drove to a sunset viewing area to get some champagne and watched how Uluru changed it's colours every now and then.
Back at the camp we started the barbie and put on some beefsteaks, sausages, tomatoes, onion and potatoes. At the campfire we talked to the other passengers from all around the world and called it a day because we would have an early start.

Back from our 3 day Outback Safari we will catch our airplane to Cairns this afternoon - when Austria is slowly waking up.
A detailed report from our Safari will follow ASAP, maybe sliced into one Post per Safari day.
Now we're leaving for Alice Springs where we'd like to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service and take a bite.
See you in Cairns, at this time the Europeans should be awake.
Bye bye Sydney

--
Today in the morning we took the plane to Alice Springs. Immediately we recognised why sunscreener and mosquito guards are very important. There are tons of flies around and if the sun shows it's getting really hot. ;)
Our hotel is located a bit further from the towns center so we took the shuttle from the hotel to get there. First we bought something to drink and then we went on to the "Anzac Hill" where you have a good 360 view over the town and the surroundings.
All in all I would say Alice Springs is not really a catch but as the town is more or less only a bunch of shops (car, grocerie, clothes,...), schools and a church but the tourism can't be denied. The residential area is outside.
Tomorrow we are getting up quite early to go on our safari trip. Therefore we're not going to post any updates for 3 days. Let's see if there is at least a mobile connection available
Letzter Tag in Sydney -- Last day in Sydney

That was Sydney so far, a metropolis at the end of the world...
Today we took the ferry from Circular Quay to Darling Harbour because we wanted to see the harbour without the tourist tours. You really get a feelin about the bay where Sydney is located and for 5AUD pP I can recommend this to everybody.
After our arrival in Darling Harbour we headed directly to the aquarium where we found nearly everything ranking from Salties to "Nemos", it's not really cheap but it was worth the money. My personal favourites were the sting rays and the dugongs.
During our stay I got the impression that the visitors are very carefull when it comes to the animals because we found funny hints like these:
* "Dead eel" - Eels like to sleep in strange positions so it may be that they lie bottom up in the tank. This mustn't bother you and we guarantee they are all well.
* "Stuck turtle - Even if it sometimes seems that a turtle is stuck beneath a piece of wood we can tell you that they are not harmed, the turtles know what they do.
* "Eels in the pond" [royal botanic garden] - The eels have colonialised themselves there and even if we truncate the pool they are afterwards back in. It's not nice to see a duckling getting eaten by an eel but that's nature. On the other side a eel baby is a welcomed food by a duck.
I find these comments very funny as I'd like to imagine how the visitors alarmed the employees :D
Later we went to see Sydney Tower which is close by the aquarium. The entry is not really cheap (25AUD) and from my perspective I'm not sure if I'd do it again. In the entry fee is the OZTrek included which reminds me somehow of the New York Skyride which was not my piece of cake.
To get the most of our last day in Sydney we went to the botanic garden in order to get a good sunset picture of the opera. Well, I didn't got my sunset but hopefully also some nice pics from the skyline and the opera.
The garden is just a beautiful place to watch the skyline and relax.
For the dinner we wanted to see the Sydney Hard Rock Cafe which is a bit of walk from the harbour. Always having the good burgers in mind we wen on but eventually I lost track of the way and a nice OZ couple has offered their help. "Oh, I think it's closed" - so much on this ;)
We got our burgers in the end around the corner of our hotel in a pub called "333". Sadly we never got any hints on the Australian pub culture so even that was a small adventure. We know from the UK that some don't offer table service but just for drinks but the aussies have improved this model and you also have to order your food at the counter.
Afterwards you get a card with a number on it whih you put on your table and once the food is ready they serve it and in return they take the card.
The good thing is you have paid everything on the counter and you don't need to wait in order to receive the bill.

I want to catch the opportunity and clear the rumour that the Australian border control is much more friendly than anywhere else. That's complete "Nonsense!" The border executives in US, Germany or Australia are all equally ineloquent.
But far more adventureous was than the journey was to get a pre-paid mobile broadband SIM. It seems like you should eventually find a shop from the biggest mobile provier (Optus) when you walk through Sydney but no such luck. After long searching and strolling through the streets we went to Telestra and bought 2 SIMs - and needed 1 hour to do so. But hey, at least it seems to work ;)
Other than strolling aroung Sydney we haven't done much because we're totally wrecked. Nevertheless we went down to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera but we hadn't got the power to explore it properly.

Posted by rc.d [aka initd] in A380, Australien, Dubai, Emirates, Munich Airport, Reisebeginn, Start, Sydney on Sonntag, 13. September 2009
Only a few hours left until our departure in Munich which will be 22:35 and estimated arrival in Dubai 06:30 (flight EK052), this means around 5h 55min flight.
From Dubai we'll leave at 10:15 (flight EK412) and arrive in Sydney around 06:05 on Tuesday 15. Sept which means another 13h and 50min flight after that we'll be totally wrecked. But at least this flight will be done with an Airbus A380 - I'm really excited about that :)
Our bags are packed, the flat is cleaned, the damn camera too and the marten trap in the car is deactivated.
There shouldn't be much left... at least i hope so.
