pix upgrade troubles

***WARNING: This has nothing to do with my travel blog and as you can probably see it's the first posting in english. So if you're not interessted in my network problems just ignore this post.***

As a special request from my "business" I've spent now half of the day with a Cisco PIX 515 as my small PIX 501 is a bit too small for the new requirements.

First of all the PIX only had 32MB RAM (factory default) but the new versions need at least 64MB. After a few hours searching we got a RAM from an old web enforcer appliance which - surprisingly - fits perfect for the PIX (and it's 128MB *es*). I was already afraid that you need some special Cisco RAM like for the routers...

Once we got this fixed I stumbled uppon another issue. The PIX came with version 6.3 pre installed at this special version has a bug in recognising the flash memory. So each time I wanted to flash the new OS I got the error msg "Insufficient flash space available for this request". After some searching on cisco.com I found this
ciscowiki entry. Regarding the case number (K49802551) this PIX OS only recognises the first 8MB of flash and the upgrade has to be done in monitor mode. Lets see if I can now setup the new design without troubles ;).

If I encounter more issues I'll post them right away so they can't be forgotten.
